Smart Bite: Chronic Inflammation - Too Much of a Good Thing

Our immune system is a wonder. It has evolved over millions of years to fight viruses and heal injuries. This is called acute inflammation, and it is necessary for a healthy life. Yet when this type of inflammation goes awry, it can become chronic low level inflammation. This systemic inflammation is the leading cause of death in the world (1). It is linked to cardiovascular disease, stroke, metabolic disorder, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and chronic pulmonary obstructive disorder. Chronic low-level inflammation is even connected to neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

No Visible Symptoms

With acute inflammation, such as a sprained ankle, you know the inflammatory response is working because of signs like swelling, pain, heat, and redness. Chronic low-level inflammation, however, is silent, with no visible systems. It is also a disease that increases with age.

Protecting Yourself Against Chronic Low-Level Inflammation

The good news is this: everyone can mitigate the risk of this type of inflammation, no matter how young or old.

Lifestyle choices make a big difference when it comes to fighting chronic low-level inflammation.
