Thank You. These two simple words have expressed gratitude for centuries. In English, “thank you” is derived from “think” as in “I think of you kindly” (around 450 AD). Credit goes to the Egyptian and Chinese cultures for writing the first thank you notes on slips of papyrus. In Europe, locally delivered handwritten notes become a new form of social expression in the 1400s. The thank you note custom came to America in the 1800s thanks to German immigrant Poulis Prang.
More than just a social nicety, giving thanks is good for our health. In the field of positive psychology, gratitude is strongly and consistently linked to more positive emotions, better self-rated health, a greater ability to deal with adversity, and the ability to build strong relationships.
