Posture & Osteoporosis: A Bi-Directional Link

I have been talking a lot about bone health recently, citing the important lifestyle factors that reduce the risk of osteoporosis, a weakening of bones that leads to fractures. According to the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation, these lifestyle choices include nutrition, balance, and weight-bearing exercises (like walking, hiking, and dance). However, another critical factor to keep our bones healthy is one we don’t talk about much: proper posture.

Posture & Osteoporosis: The Bi-Directional Link

Posture and osteoporosis are closely linked. On one hand, osteoporosis weakens bones, making them more prone to fractures, particularly in the spine. Vertebral fractures can lead to a stooped or hunched posture, known as kyphosis. On the other hand, poor posture can affect balance and mobility, increasing your risk of falls and subsequent fractures. This creates a cycle that exacerbates both osteoporosis and postural issues.
