Out of Africa (Again!)

Some of you may recall that I went on an African safari two years ago, on a trip sponsored by the African Wildlife Foundation. I just returned from Africa again, this time for a different purpose: as part of my doctoral program in global public health at Indiana University.

I know...who gets to go to Africa TWICE in two years?!

In addition to visiting local hospitals and universities, there was still plenty of time for wildlife viewing! Africa is an extraordinary place with some of the warmest, most gracious people I've ever met. I've created a scrapbook with a few special memories.

Close Encounters of the Elephant Kind

What do you do when someone says, "Okay, now go play with the elephants?"

That's exactly what happened to me during a private visit to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. The organization rescues orphaned elephants and helps prepare them for a return to the wild.

Meeting my first elephant was equal parts awe-inspiring, joyful, and humbling—and definitely one of the highlights of my trip.
